5 Essential Checkpoints Before Buying a Rowing Machine

Rowing machines are actually one of the most effective pieces of cardio equipment in the gym. They are low impact and provide a total body workout. Rowing machines do more to strengthen your core, back and abdominals than an elliptical trainer, but offer the same no-impact workout. Here are the 5 checkpoints for everybody buying a rowing machine.

Price

Prices for rowing machines vary as much as they do for any other popular type of exercise equipment. However, unlike lower-priced treadmills which are often very uncomfortable and even dangerous to use, you’ll find that rowing machines at the lower end of the spectrum are generally better quality and have fewer issues. Expect to pay upwards of $500 for a reasonable quality rowing machine and to get better results from a higher priced machine.

Resistance type

You can get several different types of resistance in your rowing machine:

  • Hydraulic piston resistance: Smaller, less expensive, but motion is not as smooth
  • Water resistance: A very real effect – but heavy, bulky and expensive
  • Magnetic resistance: Silent and infinitely adjustable, but less compact than hydraulic models
  • Air resistance: Resistance comes from your own pace, similar to being in real water – but are noisy.

Size

Where will you be keeping the rowing machine? Will it fit where you need it to while you are using it?

Control Panel

A programmable control panel is great for rowing machine beginners, and you can get models with inbuilt heart rate sensors for more accurate workout stats.

Warranty

Look for at least a two year warranty on your rowing machine.
